11th Annual
Skydance Sakakawea
Kite Festival 2003
If you missed Skydance #11, you missed a
fantastic party. The wind was spectacular (OK, maybe we didn't give the wind
proper homage on Saturday and Sunday because it blew us off the field on
Monday), the crowds were huge (OK, Monday saw only a dozen brave souls willing
to fight the 30mph prairie gusts but at least all kites survived generally
intact), the food was yummy, the campfire stories animated (some even true), and
the new and renewed friendships were enjoyed all weekend long.

Special guests at the festival included: Mike Gee, Chris Dodson, Mike Shaw, Tony and Ann Killip, Don and Alice Guick, and Jim Aune. These fine folks put on a great show for the thousand spectators who were awed and wowed by one beautiful sky after another. Big kites, art kites, and sport kites entertained the crowds all day on Saturday and Sunday. The fly was actually cancelled on Monday due to safety issues in light of the horrendous wind speeds. Each of the people mentioned above went above and beyond expectations of the festival coordinator in their willingness to share their special knowledge and assistance with all festival attendees. They even went beyond the call of duty and actually ran the festival when Deb needed to be off site due to a family graduation commitment. KUDOS, KUDOS, and more KUDOS. Photos from Sunday by Chris Dodson.
Tony Killip had his aerial photography gear with him this year for Skydance. His photos are amazing. Check them out here. Aerial Gallery.
The first ever raffle was conducted to raise money to fund the event and it raised a couple hundred dollars. Thank yous go out to Mary & John Gabby and Mike Gee for making kites to donate for the raffle. Raffle winners were: Tony Killip (Gabby kite), Theresa Seidler (Gee kite), Mark Larson (Lenzen kite), Megan Waldbillig (Alpha Plus), Toni Massey (Joel Shultz Eagle), Todd Larson (New Tech Stunter), and Sam Lind (Chinese dragon). Thanks everyone for supporting Skydance.
